Chanel and M+ Moving Image

Contributing to the Development of Moving Image in Asia and Beyond

CHANEL’s legacy is deeply connected to the evolution of cinema. The visionary Gabrielle Chanel, founder of the House, supported some of the most influential filmmakers of her era. Building on this century-long tradition of cultural patronage, CHANEL is proud to partner with M+, Asia’s global museum of contemporary visual culture, located in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District (WestK).

This partnership reflects CHANEL’s enduring commitment to fostering future generations of artists and filmmakers, contributing to the ongoing development of moving image in Asia and beyond.

In its collaboration with M+, CHANEL champions the position of ‘CHANEL Lead Curator, Moving Image’. In this pivotal role, Silke Schmickl oversees the M+ Moving Image Centre, directing its collections, commissions, and curatorial programmes.

Through CHANEL’s support, M+ has introduced two new initiatives: M+ Restored, a film restoration programme dedicated to preserving Hong Kong’s cinematic heritage, as well as the Asian Avant-Garde Film Circulation Library, an innovative project in Asia. This extensive research and collection-building endeavour will recognise and celebrate generations of pioneering Asian artists in the film industry.

CHANEL’s partnership also extends to M+ Cinema, supporting projects such as Rediscoveries, a recurring series that showcases forgotten cinematic treasures and restored classics. It also endorses Avant-Garde Now, which features the work of prominent video artists and experimental filmmakers across Asia.

“We are delighted that CHANEL, renowned for its influence over the global spheres of creation and visual culture, shares a united vision with M+ to preserve film culture and nurture moving image practices, and, more importantly, support arts and cultural innovators to advance new ideas and greater representation. CHANEL’s generous support is instrumental in pushing the boundaries of M+’s curatorial endeavours in moving image and promoting the vitality of our rich film heritage to the global audience.”
